Choosing an engagement ring, from the shape to her size

Pick the shape and the center stone first, then her size, then the gold

Start with the shape she already wears, then choose the center stone, grown or mined. Both are real diamonds, and most buyers here take lab-grown, which carries the big centers. Look at two carats and up, the size about half the buyers here chose. Get her size right before you order, because a resized ring cannot come back. Take 14K for a ring she never takes off.

Find your ring size in a minute

Your screen becomes the sizer. Set it with a bank card, then measure the finger you will wear the ring on, with a ring that already fits that finger or with a strip of paper.

1. Set the screen with a card

Lay any bank, debit or ID card flat on the screen, standing tall, so its short edge runs across the box, and move the slider until the box is exactly as wide as the card. No bank card? A driver's license, metro card, gift card or hotel key is the same size. Without any card the circle and the ruler are not to scale: measure your paper strip with a real ruler and set that number in millimeters on the strip slider, then send it to the desk.

2. Measure

Take a ring that fits the same finger of the same hand the new ring will live on; every finger is its own size. Set it on the screen over the circle and move the slider until the circle just fills the inside of the ring.

Size 7, 17.3 mm inside

Size 7: 17.3 mm across, 54.4 mm around. It is the most bought size here: 21 percent of the engagement rings sold here in the past year with a size recorded. 159 of the 174 rings here list size 7.

Between two sizes? Take the one that passes the knuckle and sits snug below it. A wide band, 8 mm and up, fits tighter, so go up a half size. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.

Shapes: which engagement ring shape to buy

Buy the shape she already wears in her other rings. More than half the rings bought here were marquise, most of them one design in four center sizes. Round is on the most listings and sits compact. Oval, marquise and pear carry their weight in length, so they look larger than a round of the same carat. A marquise or pear has points that chip first, so look for a prong over each tip.

Lab or natural: lab-grown vs natural diamond engagement rings

Both are real diamonds, graded on the same letters; one is grown, the other dug from the ground. Most buyers here chose lab-grown, and the grown centers run bigger: the middle one is 2.50 carats, a mined one about a carat. Neither is the wrong buy. Where a listing leaves the origin out, ask the desk which it is and what report backs the center. Lab-grown engagement rings have a page of their own.

Carat and grades: how many carats, and what color and clarity mean

About half the buyers here chose a center of two carats or more, and 2 carat engagement rings and 3 carat diamond rings each have a page. Read the center carat, not the total weight, which adds in the side stones. A one-carat round is about 6.5 mm across. D, E and F look colorless, and G through J read white once set. Setting and metal: solitaire, halo or hidden halo, in 14K, 18K or platinum

A solitaire, one stone on a plain band, is the setting named most here, and prongs hold nearly every center. A halo rings the center with small stones so it reads larger; a hidden halo sits under the center, seen only from the side. Have a jeweler check the prong tips every year or so. Take 14K for every day, as most buyers here did; 18K is a richer yellow that marks sooner, and platinum stays white. Pick her wedding band at the same time, or start from the wedding ring sets.

Size: how to find her ring size without asking

Measure a ring she wears on her ring finger, and tell the desk which hand. The ring sizer on this page reads any ring. If you must guess, 7 is the size bought most here, and nearly a third of the sized rings sold were half sizes, so measure to the half. 14K, 18K or platinum for an engagement ring?

Take 14K for every day. Most buyers chose it, and it is harder than 18K. Choose 18K for a richer yellow, knowing it marks sooner. Platinum stays white on its own and weighs the most on the hand.

Can an engagement ring be resized?

It depends on the band: stones all the way round often rule it out. Ask the desk before you order, since the refund policy counts resizing as custom work and a resized ring cannot come back.

Can I return an engagement ring, and how fast does it ship?

Yes, from the case, unless its listing says non-returnable: new and unworn, inside 14 days of delivery, on the return label the desk issues; its cost and 5 percent restocking are kept. Can the wedding band come with the ring? Some rings here are bridal sets sold with their band, and wedding ring sets gathers them. For a band of her own, see women's wedding rings. What is a toi et moi ring? Two stones set side by side. On the toi et moi rings here they are lab-grown diamonds, often two shapes, such as an emerald cut beside a pear.

Three stone, halo or hidden halo? A three stone ring flanks the center with a stone on each side. A halo rings the center with small diamonds so it reads larger, and a hidden halo sits under the center, where it shows from the side.
